IMMERSION

Harun Farocki
Germany 2009 20 min.

ImmFor two days in January 2009, at Fort Lewis, near Seattle, Washington, Farocki filmed a workshop where civilian therapists instructed army therapists on how to work with “Virtual Iraq”, or “VI”, a computer-animated programme designed to help soldiers overcome the experience that has caused them fear, by reliving the past. The aim is to treat and train the soldiers who were traumatized by the war. Immersion therapy enables them to repeat, to retell and relive the experience.
The training part largely works like a game: while the VI programme is running, the therapist sits at the computer wearing a headset. Meanwhile, the patient sits or stands next to the therapist, wearing virtual reality glasses that transport him/her to a fictitious Iraq, where he/she can move about, creating an experience that is controlled at all times.
